Not scaling is a feature not a problem in federated networks

With the shift from silos to federation for our core social infrastructure, we need to rethink the values embedded in the technology we use. The first one to look at is scaling, the whole technical stack/ programming thinking is currently based on this value if you want a definition of a #dotcons, it’s this, it scales to dominate and control the market. With federation, the server software, not scaling, is a needed feature to spread the nodes as widely and richly as possible. Yes the network itself needs to scale, but the individual nodes in the network not scaling is an essential feature not a problem to be overcome. This is counterintuitive to most of our current geek thinking.

A federated network is first a community and secondly a software network designed to nurture this community. If the software dominates and controls the social, you break the federation and end up in the place you are trying to leave, a silo.

Not scaling is a feature, not a problem, in federated networks.

#OMN a seed is planted

On the #OMN #indymedia reboot over this winter I planted a seed in the ground, the Berlin community watered it, waiting for it to sprout, then needs nurturing past the seedling stage to a healthy plant, the first step to healthy media forist.

If you are interested in a flourishing alt-media garden get involved in #OMN plant care, till the world you would like to see, water your dreams

A message for my #dotcons frends

When people deny the history of reposabilerty then they deny reality and join the “post truth world” of Trump and Boris.

The majority of my #failbook friends are both sad and bad on this subject as they don’t remember the times they argued that the #dotcons were not evil and cat memes were the right thing to do as the world heated up and is now catching fire.

A lot of the more tech minded run workshops on campining on #dotcons as our ones healthy #openweb tools were ripped apart by our home grown #geekproblem

You guys need to get busy with spades to compost the shit you spread around in the digital world. And spreading more shit just makes the alt more smelly and uninviteing.

I put up with years of trolling on this subject. it’s a good time to balance this and for the first time in a while do something useful. At some point you have to support a real grassroots media project.

https://unite.openworlds.info/indymedia

Hope you understand that this is not a #geekproblem project and not pushing #fashernistas agenders and a clear move away from #failbook and the #dotcons in general #OMN

Who is the troll?

On Facebook, you guys all bought into this disaster. Arguing it was the best thing to do for outreach media and staying in touch with friends and family. You got angry at people who told you this was dangerous and would fail you as individuals and fail us all as a society. You my friends on #failbook created this mess.

The start of excepting you are in a abusive relationship is to publicly admit this and publicly stepaway from this mess to more healthy relationships #OMN

History is a circal. The last election we had the opportunity to move away to the best of the 20th century. We instead choose the worset and our embrace of the #dotcons is core to this fail.

This is a lot of trolling going on in #failbook and most do not see themselves as trolls.
The is morality then the is basic common sense (which is a product of ideology/lived experience) people tend to mix them up.
Am thinking most people will see this as the first thus more trolling will happen. WHO IS THE TROLL is an intresting question at this point.
This is a disater as Failbook and Google are in a race to get you to click on cat memes to acheve this outcome
Please dont forget that on #failbook we (the clective we) created this mess nytimes.com/2020/01/24/opinion by doing exacly what you wont to do now, if we were on a #dotcons (click)
Its basic stuff.

OMN is a trust based project

The idea is to use human moderation flows as a feature to spread federation wider. Each flow has to first be created then is either trusted – ie they are going to keep posting good stuff or moderated that sometimes they post good stuff.

So the system only scales if human beings reach out to each other to build trust links. If everything stays on moderation then the workload soon becomes unmanageable or the site is overrun by irelevance or spam. In both cases the site sesses to be useful. This is a core feature of the network to push human scale federated trust communities.

The only way to get a useful site is to build a big healthy community (with wide groups of admins and moderators) or a small focus trust group based on quality choice of connections. Both are good outcomes, and what the #OMN is about building.

If we build in automation then we will have lots of middling quality sites that are borderline useful. A signal to noise issue. There will be less motivation to spesherlise and the network will likely fail because of this.

Less is more is a core of the project. The #geekproblem is the desire to improve the network with better tools

Spam and low quality posts have to find a way to flow into the network and when they are in they need to then flow to the quality parts of the network.

The problem we face is that there might not be any sites allowing new content in… so this will lead to the need to set up more outlying sites and spread the network wider and narrow the focus of these new sites to keep admin down, spreading the network wider and narrowing the focus etc.

You see an organic growth of base sites narrow/local/subject to middle sites regional/topic to top sites outreach/mainstreaming.

The bottom sites feedup to the top sites both by quality tags subject feeds and aggregation editorial articles. In both cases these directly link back to the bottom content sites.

The traditional value pyramid is reversed – the top sites are easey to setup and admin but hard to add value to. The middle sites are the core of the project sifting and adding value vier aggregation. All the true value lies at the base were the publishing happens

Boatingeurope LiFeP04 battery upgrade for liveaboard lifeboat

Looking at upgrading my boat liveing battery setup. Am following this guide to dip my toe in, currently my main 500amp leadacide battery bank has failed after 4 years use due to a fault on my #MPPT solar controller with the boat left on hard standing in romania over winter. Being under voltage for a few months killed them.

Last year in the spring while on the danube delta I did a quick fix by rewiring to an old 110amp good quality starter battery I had as the boat liveing bank. This has lasted us through this year on low power usage overnight.

It’s time to get a better setup.

#OMN idea of indymedia reboot

Did some images for #OMN idea of #indymedia reboot

The idea is to keep it simple to push the control balance from the geek to the users. To use existing tools to build a open network then let the users decide how to use it. This is the “news” part of indymedia the privacy focused actavist part is needed as well. Plugging in tor and scuttlebutt provides that side. In the end its just human moderated flows and actually technologicaly neutral, anything can be hub/peer on the network. Its just like the underlining tech of the internet and web itself.

Simple. And if you look at the fedivers all this already exists.

Useing WordPress as a open tech project.

We end up using WP from the problem of finding a non #geekproblem alternative place to host a site. With the dotcon option its fine if you are building a site to do anything more than basic public publishing then you have to pay for the pro options which are expensive. We fell into this trap http://boatingeurope.openworlds.info were we are locked out of the basic advanced options unless we pay 3-5 times the monthly amount, in this WP hosting is a #dotcons we paid two years in advance to get a big discount so locked in now without the functions we need.

We also self host a WP install on OVH http://hamishcampbell.com this gives you the full power of the pro features at a cheap price and works fine till you hit a #geekproblem now our SSL is not working due to a change in the domain name and some plugins have stopped working becouse our PHP is outa date. Both are basic #geekproblem to fix and the online help is so full of commercial spam that its hopeless with out haveing a geek to step in and fix the blackbox this is my experience on both the hosted and the #DIY use of #WP as a website. Sorry this is not a solution.

Windpower on a inland boat

its a nice cheap Chinese 400w turbine. The problem with small windpower is finding “clean air” not near buildings and trees. Thus london is a no for windpower. If you are in the coast or wide open countryside then can make sense. At our mooreing we are maybe 100m from nearest trees on only one side so its working ok here. But still only 10-20w on 20km wind and up to 50-100w on 30km wind. But its 24hours when the wind blows so good compliment to solar in the right location.

Tec in the post truth world

The #4opens are a kinda of constitution that keeps the “post truth world” at bay. As long as you keep the #4opens in place and respect the diversity they can hold in place.

It’s a chicken-and-egg issue.

The #OMN is a social technology held together by the #4opens that pushes into being digital commons. What we then do with this liberated space is up to us.

The rebooted #indymedia project is a radical media project motivated by the #pga hallmarks that can only be built as a trust based network in this #TAZ space.

Wikipedia is kinda your friend, arty view of #TAZ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporary_Autonomous_Zone

How to leave the #dotcons

Ok you create a account here https://activism.openworlds.info/about this will put you into a small actavists community that is connected to over a million mostly normal and some weard people spread over thousands of servers. You can now fallow and talk to anyone on the network and they can fallow you.

This will give you a good desktop ui

For mobile https://tusky.app/ install this and add the account you setup on activism.openworlds.info to get a good mobile expirence.

Dont know best apple apps but the are a few

Next stage you need to find 20 or more people to fallow. You can do this by useing the search and hashtags. And/Or the are some lists here https://communitywiki.org/trunk of intresting people. Remember you need to fallow 20 or more people for the system to start to work

Then post a intro, use hashtags etc.

Make the effort to talk to people on the network you will likely not know any of them so its like going to a strangers party. But its a fab party when you warm up and build some connections.

Keep posting each day, comment on others posts. The social flow after a while will become self sustaining. Keep your failbook account active at the same time, start to offer a helping hand to your #dotcons friends to take the step, then spend the time introducing them to your #openweb network.

You have stepped away to the openweb.
