Cat videos – A “shadow ban” experiment on youtube

Just finished a cat video, it’s an experiment for #YouTube. We have over 7000 subscribers and over 5 million video views on our legacy #visionontv account Our viewing numbers have been dropping over the last few years, and now we get very few views, likely do to do with the activists content not being “ad friendly”. Have recently tried making fluffy content, very few views, so let’s try cats 😉

Am curious if the “algorithm” will pick it up or not. If it does pick up will it feed views onto the other videos on the account, with the suggestions etc.

Pushed it out quite hard on #failbook #twitter and #mastodon, but it did not pickup views on youtube (37 views in 15 hours) which suggests that the visionontv account is “shadowbanned” not surprising I suppose, will try pushing the video on cat forums  to test how strong the “ban” is.

You can find much more interesting (but not as cute) videos on http://visionon.tv

Seeing were the problem is and acting on it.

What we are pushing at the #OMN is x10 to hard for normal people to use. When we outreach meany people come aboard to try and push onto the project 10x harder to use tools than what we push – this is the #geekproblem expecting people to user tools that are x100 times harder to use than the tools the #dotcons offer them for “free”

This destructive behaver has to stop.To have hope of a #openweb reboot., lets try and be human as we have piles of shit to shovel all ready without adding more.

We need more crew to make this rollout work

If you would like to help with moving away from this current world/media mess please create an account: https://unite.openworlds.info this is the organizing space, yes this is to complex and needs to be made simpler and more #KISS but for now it’s what we have and works fine. Have a read through the issues and wikis on each #openweb project.
Then we need constant (polite) feedback on this thread to make the current site more useable for normal people https://unite.openworlds.info/indymedia/epicyon/issues/17
We have a public chat room here where you can get to know the crew and talk about the projects. Yes we know its complex, but agen it does work – here is a “easy” link for android phones https://conversations.im/j/indymediaback@conference.chat.openworlds.info or you will have to be geeky/ask for help and work it out from here: indymediaback@conference.chat.openworlds.info for other platforms.
Sorry about this it’s the #geekproblem that we are working to mediate and with your participation we CAN build useable tools.
If you feel you cannot help with tech/user side then you can support the core project with money here https://opencollective.com or if you don’t have money (we all understand) turn up and make tea at your local protest camp to talk about the #indymediaback #OMN project.
Let’s take a step way from this mess, pickup shovels #OMN and compost this shit pile https://unite.openworlds.info/indymedia/indymedia-reboot/issues/15

The current mess and the media

You all built the #dotcons that gave him the power… phww… please try to do better next #indymediaback

Q. The far right have mastered the internet for recruitment and disinformation, the rest of us are barely in the game, would a completely regulation free internet not benefit them and lead to fascism? If so, how should regulation work to stop them?

A. that’s a good question, that the is no easy answer too. Most liberal regulation of the internet are clearly disastrous so this is a bad direction to push. This leaves us only one option to do a better job ourselves. This is currently the only real option we have available #indymediaback #omn

Of course, we have to shovel a pile of post-modern, liberal careerist shit out the way to make room for this radical/ progressive #openweb media. I look around and mostly see “our” media adding to the stinking shit pile we need to compost. Our first step is away from our own mess #OMN

Q. Lies travel faster than the truth, the far right understand that and exploit it without conscience. Without moderation, I cannot see how to combat it

A. Pessimism travels faster than optimism, but only optimism has any hope of creating the change we need. Feed the problem or solve the problem, the is no “third way”

We need more crew to make this rollout work https://unite.openworlds.info/indymedia/indymedia-reboot/issues/15

The nutters in “power” need challenging, where is this challenge coming from?

What we are seeing here is an absolute failure of our liberals. In both America with the right-wing nutters and British virus plague.

The nutters in “power” need challenging, where is this challenge coming from?

The right and the centre are useless for any nice outcome. The left are missing as an option. The is a pile of social shit, we need shovels and compost heaps to clear this mess #OMN

Next step in the #OMN

The majority of #mainstreaming #openweb tech projects have the assumption that human nature is a fixed thing and that every project has to be built in reaction to the 40 years of neo-liberal #deathcult that we all live in now as this is the “only” human nature visible. They completely miss/ignorer the social nature of people in groups in this look back at the 20th century, and we have clearly different views of human nature as examples to build society. Call it social democracy, call it communism, call it what you like. We DO NOT have to build tools in relation to the #deathcult, and we clearly should not base “hope” on tools that are built in this relation.

Mastodon, activertypub and the fedivers took a small #stepaway from this mess. The #OMN takes the next step away. For the rest #compost and #shovels come to mind.

The #OMN is a simple #KISS social tech project.

All these projects work off the same core code/workflow of tagging and editing metadata.

#Indymediaback is the news part of the project. This is to grow journalism from the grassroots and to make our news mainstream.

#Makinghistory – is the archiving project. This is to preserve and grow our history from the grassroots and make our history mainstream.

#Friendsandfamily – is the social networking project. For family/affernerty groups to move away from the mainstream #dotcons and to nourish the grassroots.

All the projects are and federated.

Can you host videos over Tor?

Q. lf we know someone who could host videos over Tor, could that help you? Is the software Tor/clearnet agnostic?

A.  it might be an abuse of the #tor network to stream videos over it as it has limited bandwidth and is run on a volunteer bases. It would be a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons please have a look into the pros and cons of this as am interested.

Some answers from a brief search:

Q. under what circumstances Tor can handle streaming video?

A. What Tor can’t handle is lots of people consuming lots of bandwidth simultaneously. There’s no clean way to load balance and everyone is at the mercy of independent relays.

A. We’ve been saying for years not to run BitTorrent over Tor, because the Tor network can’t handle the load

Interesting most people talk about security/privacy and only respect for the commons as an afterthought – this is clearly a #geekproblem

update

Q. I2P is run by volunteers and encourages the sharing of videos. The internet is a Commons and depends on trust, not just Tor. ISPs have Fair Use policies etc. If not Tor maybe this person can share over I2P.

A. This one kinda fails one of the – open “industrial” standards. Only people who went through the process of installing bad UX code could watch the videos so not a good outreach project. The is a resion we are building out a OPEN media network. Worth thinking about this issue “It easy to keep crossing wires with “media” vs. personal. Media should be open, with clear sources, except when protecting them. Whereas personal data should default to private”

Were next for #indymediaback

The #OMN project is more important for what it does not do. The is a core/ perfiery outlook, more than 99% of peoples input from mainstream tech culture is clearly coming from the perfery for the human centred workflow of the #OMN Our mission is to shift through the tech pile and find the 1% that is core to the human project. Avoid getting lost in the stinky, shiny, fashions that the majority push.

A good project needs focus, without it you just have a diluted mess. In a world driven by #stupidindividualism we have problems with en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_fait to constantly overcome. Generally people have no idea they are coursing a problem which makes it difficult to deal with.

For the January meeting am interested in looking in detail at #activertypub (and the new tech around it) as we should have a wider outline of the social #OMN project by then and have an urgent need to find technology that fits into it. Good focus for this meeting. Of course everyone is welcome.

This should lead to working on the next codebase of the #indymediaback project.

We are on a mission

Human tech – OMN

To build the framework of an #OMN site there are – 5 functions

The network is made of pipes and holding tanks with different end connectors. The idea is that every part, in abstract, is understandable by a normaliseish human being.

* link/subscribe to a flow – plumb a pipe in, on, the end/beginning of the pipe can be other functions

* trust/moderate flow – through flow or to the holding tank then though a sieve to shift the flow to different pipes.

* rollback – empty, remove that content to a point in the flow or remove objects from the flow.

* edit matadata – add to the trailing tail of the data object, this will change how data is sieved and is the main function in aggregation news.

* publish content – add an object to the flow (you can maybe edit this object or not)

The is then the storage tank which is a database.

That’s it the rest is UX and UI think of it as macaron for news publishing.

TAKENOTE: the is nothing original in this, its how our plumbing, our electrical grids and even the neurons in our brains work and fits into the #nothingnew that is a core of this project.

Peertube is a good project with issues

#peertube project is fantastic BUT people have been talking about moderation since before the project started. Have a look back over the “closed” issues on their git dev site. Maybe re-open some of these as a step.
Worked hard to make our instances work http://visionon.tv
The is an unspoken open/closed debate in tech. #framasoft are building an open tool #peertube with closed moderation backend – we have a shitty mess in most peertube instances is this cross development. They don’t understand it’s an issue.
With the #OMN we setout to address the open/closed debate at source its what the project is for.
Some talk on a related issue https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/issues/3488

Lets build a real world example base on the OMN tools set- a indymeda instance/network.

Looking at this very simply they are two pools of data – trusted and moderated

– the trusted data is displayed on the site and flows out from the site as feeds.

– the moderated is displayed on a back end moderation/draft feed the mods of the site get to decide what to do with this content, to add it to trusted, to leave in draft/mod for consensus, to remove it.

The content that is trusted is unedited, though the long tail of metadata can be edited and updated by mods.

The site banner and side links are static.

The site display is based on two main flows that are both #activertypub and #RSS.

Newswire and features (and optional individual flows based on user accounts)

* The first main flow, newswire, is made up of a number of sources

– user accounts from this instance (if turned on) based on roles defined by the .

– boolean logic tag created #activertypub or RSS feed – there should be on both ends of this flow in the best implementation – we can live with one end. These feeds are added by the mods of the site to allow a local network of publishing sites to be created and nurtured

* The features is a feed for storeys created from the resources published to the newswire, linking back to them. The flow is original content published as a feature by the mod crew based on if its in moderation it is treated as a draft not yet reach consensus if it is trusted it appears on the page and flow feed. This feed is a prime news resource to other newswires of indymedia sites that subscribe to it.
