Offering a real alternative to the dotcon world

This is a quite #reboot of the #openweb going on. This #4open project has nearly 1 million users https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(software) It's one of the use it or lose it moments for life outside failbook. It would be a bad time for progressive funders to start to prop up the #dotcon world if we don’t try to change direction this sad outcome is invertible.

A funding application to setup/bootup both a "NGO" and a "Activism" instance of Mastodon. Each could have different "terms of service" but would both talk to each other and the wider OStatus networks. Its time and not a #dotcon and works #OMN

Would need a crew of 3 people part time for 6 months roll out then 6 month sustaining after this year the project should be self sustaining due to low running costs. Can use patron and occasional donation drives.

Crew
Hamish – lead fixer and Activist outreach
Sys admin – to set-up the servers and keep them running
NGO Outreach – to outreach to NGO's and get them to buy into the #openweb project.

Funding
5-7K funding for the first year. From Lush and Edgefund
This would mostly be part time wages with some server and outreach costs. A monthly donation would go to the development https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

The project would be organised on Github as a #4opens project as a part of a open media network.

Draft funding app for OMN

needs more work, comment please

1) Tell us about the world as you see it.

The world is ruining headlong into out of control climate change. Our fragile society, just in time distribution etc. bodes not well for a humain outcome

Our political class is morally bankrupt and incapable of dealing with these crises.

As a person interested in technology and its impact on society, a hope of the early 21st century is/was the open internet, the transformation to peer to peer relationships. This has/is being enclosed by the #dotcon such as facebook, youtube, instagram, uber etc. Their silo'ed data and invisible algorithm controls what we know and do.

The 20th centery was a had a strong noble streek trying to make the human condition a better thing. In the 21st we have less idealisam and mouch more need for this.

The enclosed world reinforces the bad status que. The open world, while being two sided in outcome at least rebalances this.

Over my life I have seen real peer to peer groups that have sustained and renewed them selves for months, years, decades. We can and need to do better useing these examples.

----- defernition -----

Silo

Is a place for holding/hoarding closed data – this is used by the #dotcons to extract funding form “free users” when mainstream/alt silo projects finish, as 99.9% do, the data varnishes and is lost, and in this the effectiveness of any alt building is diminished. Silos do not use open licensing for content re-use. Just about every alt/grassroots media project is a silo. It's about capturing data.

2) What change do you want to make in the world?

I would like to play a role in seeding a diversity of functioning peer to peer alternatives as both a practical and a exemplar to inspire and inform a more positive sustainable world. Its too big a mission to save the world but planting and nurturing seeds is a start.

I have been working over the years to build and sustain alt/grassroots media in the UK and the wider world.

There is a wide spread feeling that the #dotcon are bad for us as individuals, making us sad and isolated, and the wider society. Its nearly mainstream that people want a way out.

Alt/grassroots media used to play a larger role in the world, now it is small and isolated over run by loons and conspiracy. I wont to work in a world I know very well to #reboot it as a working networked 4opens exemplar.

http://hamishcampbell.com/en/navigate/-/asset_publisher/m8lZ/blog/looking-at-the-tech-and-organising-of-uk-alt-grassroots-media?

Alt media are a small exmaplr that did and can agen have a large impact.

---------- defernition ----------

Portal

Is an idea that you can be the big one, all the small fashionista websites aspire to be the big one and by doing this they are working to the logic of the #dotcon and working against the logic of the openweb. They are building a project to lock there users into their project. Portal and silo are overlapping (but different) ideas for building web projects. In the mainstream, apple is a prime example of this working. In the alt/grassroots almost all alt/grassroots media projects are portals. It's about capturing users

3) What do you believe has prevented this change to date?

Nothing am going to say is original, and little am proposing is original.

There is a long forgotten trail of siled/protel alternatives to the #dotcon and simuler failed alt/grasstroots media projects. I have lived through and been at the centres of this churning of siloed thinking. A number of recurring themes come to mind:

Geek problem

fashionista

one other

Basically alt/grassroot media projects are/have been isolated islands with limited sense of history and continuity. Alt/grassrots media does not link to each other in this they are stuck as late 20th century silos.

As an extra issue that am not going to address the are no/few business models to sustain projects based on the #4opens. I dont propse a sulution to this, but opening up a space will brining fresh minds to this isssue.

–----- defernition ------

Dotcon

Are for-profit data silos in the old days working as portals, more recently they are building out siloed networks as a pseudo networked portal. Many alt media projects aspire to be #dotcon

4) What are you going to do to get there?

in the short term - Get list of existing grassroots/alt media sites to prominently link to each other on their front pages.

Longer term, building on this new found affinity and effectiveness build out KISS exemplary digital tools to peer to peer facilitate this first stage. LINK OMN

In this roll out #4opens will “inoculate” new generations to the endemic scourge of geek problem, fashernista thinking etc.

I know all the players in alt media space current and passed.

--------- defernition ----------

Link

is where ALL the value is on the open web. Without links content has NO VALUE.

5) What challenges or uncertainties do you expect to face?

Nobody will be interested in this because they do not understand openweb ideas, I don’t think this is a big hurdle just getting funding will likely be anufe to take a step over this, fashernistas love funding and "new" toys.

Old media thinking has been a block on opeweb tech for news for a long time, but this blocking is whering due to the fading of the strength of old media and the incrocing strength of the #dotcon

If they are they will say its been done before. The is a strong smell of defeat in much of the alt/grassroots – its all been a big fuckup for the last 10 years or so.

People just want to use corporate tools. It took them a long time to understand that this was a problem but they have a fear now of #dotcon

The #dotcon will push their own “solution” to the very problems they embody. In this we may not overcome the geek and fashionista problem. This is a hard one.

-------- defernition ------

Geek

A subculture that is wraparound right in many outcomes and helped to strangle the original successful alt/grassroots media projects.

6) What part does openness play in your idea?

it has been interesting to read your website :) a nice feeling to come out from the wilderness... as a sayed before the is nothing original in the basic tech that needs developing. It would be nice to get some funding that wasent pushing me into being a branded portal...

#4open

open license

open source (free software)

open data

open process (the hardiest one)

In a small seedling way, the wider, OMN plays a role in booting up a plot of KISS semantic web.

------------ defernition -----------

Fashionista

A wider subculture that churns the growth of alt/grassroots so little can grow beyond seedlings.

7)

need to outline the KISS OMN project think the is a link...

------------ defernition ------------

NGO

The liberals that use bureaucratic funding to push out the geek and NGO agendas over alt/grassroots projects.

8)

yes, but no if this is a problem (LOOK at small print)

9)

other - we have a pot of match funding from the visionontv project that wants the OMN tech to roll out a alt/grassroots node (part of a wider network) CHECK SMALL PRINT

10) Who are your current or potential key partners?*

list of alt media groups, list of alt-tech orgs

--------------------- defernition -----------------

Network

Is an understanding of mutual aid and of “diversity of strategy”. It's native to the openweb and should be at the base of any alt/grassroots media project. In the closed #dotcon A/B testing is a shadow of this.

Booting up the Open Media Network (OMN)

The open web is being locked out of the closed web – with share this options replacing web-links and Facebook replacing most peoples blogs. If this continues the “open web” will wither and become dysfunctional and the closed web will grow to become the web for the majority of people. With this change the largest most successful experiment in social change by communication will die.

This is the movement we are supposed to have the LifeRay platform and linking project ready to surf http://edition.cnn.com/2013/02/25/opinion/rushkoff-why-im-quitting-facebook/index.html to quote from the article:

"The promotional leverage that Facebook affords me is not worth the price. Besides, how can I ask you to like me, when I myself must refuse to like you or anything else? I have always appreciated that agreeing to become publicly linked to me and my work online involves trust. It is a trust I value, but -- as it is dependent on the good graces of Facebook -- it is a trust I can live up to only by unfriending this particularly anti-social social network. Maybe in doing so I'll help people remember that Facebook is not the Internet. It's just one website, and it comes with a price."

As part of building the OMN we have 4parts that already exist:
* newsflash (embeds)
* link database (embeds}
* video player (embeds)
* funding site (networking)

And we have the new functionality in LR6.1 and social office to build new tools with. OK - is the a possibility on moving on this?

UPDATE:
- The funding site has some images, needs the text re-wrighting http://fund.openworlds.info/

- The video embed pages are all in place on the channal pages such as http://headmix.visionon.tv/embed

New journalism - Stories grow from the soil

This is two draft's of a project for the end of the summer

FUNDRAISING FOR THE REAL STORY

Stories grow from the soil, they grow from social/geologic conflicts. Thus an interesting place to start a story is from the mud and dust where it stands. With this in mind we are fundraising to offer new perspectives on an urgent reality. We will walk across Israel for 6 weeks, interviewing people in the communities we pass through. The countries' perspectives will come from the actual grassroots, from the mud and dust. Traditional media is already covering the story from the top down. Who is covering where it matters?

Visionontv has the track record and expertise to make high quality, immediate reportage available globally. We will be shooting and publishing 3 video interviews a day, 5 days a week (using visionontv's innovating mobile reporting templates and technology) for a total of nearly 100 interviews. We will build a website to permanently embed these videos as well as syndicating them widely to all contemporary media hosting sites and social networks. We will use visionontv's auto updating media player to embed the videos widely on appropriate sites around the web. We will work towards having hosting/publishing on partner sites such as (****) in NYC and the (****) in the UK.

We have most of the equipment, time and skills to do this - all we lack is a basic budget.

Budget

£3000 to cover 6 weeks of reporting

Video equipment: £300 (external mic, lenses, solar charging set-up)

Second backup camera phone: £500

Air fare £400 x 2 £800

Insurance £50 x 2 £100

Website £300

Subsistence £100 a week (for both) x 6 £600

Backed support (publicity and social media etc) £100 x2

Contingency £200

Total £3000

The plan would be to fund-raise on Kickstarter and ecwip) and leave the UK in *** 1st.

Walking across a country – reporting from Israel to Palestine #

The modern world is full of seemingly unsolvable problems. The conflict between Palestine and Israel has been ongoing since the 1940's and has now reached a deadlock. The are some cultural/media crossovers but at visionontv we have a very B&W view of the conflict.

On visionontv we have been aggregating together all the best non-traditional media news videos into a stream of contemporary media. In the Israel – Palestine conflicts we have had a huge bias towards news from the Palestine perspective (link) which is obviously the opposite of what you would see on traditional media (link). This mismatch is normal for traditional media but problematic if you are interested in building a new, wider/more balanced contemporary media.

Our wider project at visionontv is to template new media techniques  for journalism (link) This is to counteract the normal new media approach, which is to have hundreds of cameras covering the same spot, few of them distributing their images and very few doing the journalism to put it into perspective.

Stories grow from the soil, they grow from social/geologic conflicts. Thus an interesting place to start a story is from the mud and dust where it stands. With this in mind we are fundraising to try a new template – new technology and old paths. We will walk across the countries involved in the conflict for 6 weeks, interviewing normal people in the communities we pass through – the countries' perspectives will come from the actual grassroots, from the mud. Traditional media is already covering the story topdown. Who is covering where it matters?

We will be shooting and publishing 3 video interviews a day, 5 days a week (using visionontv's innovating mobile reporting templates and technology) for a total of nearly 100 interviews. We will build a website to permanently host these videos as well as syndicating them widely to all contemporary media hosting sites and social networks. We will use visionontv's auto updating open media player to embed the videos widely on appropriate sites around the web. We will work towards having hosting/publishing on partner sites such as **** in NYC and the **** in the UK.

THE VILLAGE BUTTY

Boaters are a vibrant minority culture living a parallel life in the heart of our cities and countryside. They are currently under threat from Insidious gentrification. The Village Hall Butty will give them a space to gather and celebrate their community. The aim is to create a floating village hall for boaters, local residents and the myriad of people who visit the towpath every year. Through social events, skill sharing workshops, regular clubs and other activities – they aim to create a vital hub for information and advice with a focus on promoting sustainable living, integrating communities and protecting and enjoying the waterways.

To make this communal space on the London waterway a reality we need to raise the Crowdfunder target of £5000 in a few days time. We have raised more than half of our target now and funds are being sought via www.crowdfunder.co.uk/the-village-butty

The brainchild of Alice Cade, Ian Horrocks and James Bentley, seasoned boaters who have lived on the canals and rivers for many years, the event aims to bring together the boating and land based community to enjoy and celebrate the waterways and the variety of people who use them.

Please help keep the village hall afloat for the local community to enjoy for years to come. Find us on Facebook www.facebook.com/thevillagebutty or Crowdfunder www.crowdfunder.co.uk/the-village-butty

The Village Butty Project

Update

They have raised just over half the funding and the is still 11 days to go (appeal ending 15th July 2015)

Events on all week, big day https://www.facebook.com/events/1680993855468109/

Please support this project by directly donating or sharing this post with your friends and relatives.

The longest and friendliest village in the UK is actually the London Canal Network. Its a tight-knit community of eccentrics and iconoclasts, mums and kids, working people and retires, a cross section of life live in a continuously roving/changing mix.

For the last 3 years or so James (and the Butty) have been providing a floating gathering place for this community, while trying to make a living as a events space. He was becoming exorsted and the sums went adding up so he decided to sell the Butty a few months ago, the was a uproar from the community of boaters who had been relying on this resources, a couple Alice and Ian decided to take on the project and grow it into a not for profit company – the Village Butty Project was born.

For this to become sustainable and independent the Butty needs a companion boat to move it, provide catering, light and working space. The is now a fund raise going on to make this happen. The boat has been sourced, the money is need to renovate into being the companion space to make the village hall Butty a self standing project. To keep this invaluable resource working on the “cut”.
